An Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Secure the Job That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
