No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
