Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such treatments should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
