The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
