We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.
A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters face the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
