Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
