Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's unflinching satire examines the tyranny of women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore offers an inspired performance in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into presenting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and terrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a steadily more vampiric relationship among both women. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller stars the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a break from writing about international wars to embark on an opulent ship accompanied by a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her husband, plus additional affluent passengers. However when a mysterious woman falls into the sea overnight and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Out now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills through this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like protective of her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage embraces his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He acts as a self-obsessed film star playing himself who accepts a lucrative offer to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the potential kingpin, Cage's unique performing skills comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's locked-room horror holds up well even without a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, several child abductions has left the local kids anxious. Once Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices providing assistance, and the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and bad faith, however the lead actress manages to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks used by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – one of whom is his own wife. Each performer are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging psychological game of deception or honesty develops. The supporting cast take part the clever spy entertainment.
